Default What's up with all the birds?

I regularly feed the birds but have been making a special effort during the recent bad spell of weather. They have mixed seed, sunflower hearts, fat balls, cheese and (being a Jack Sprat kinda guy) all the fat removed from my meat. Plus fresh water twice a day. For some reason they seem totally uninterested. Normally they are flocking around the garden and fighting to get ahead in the pecking order. I still see a good few around the garden but they pay little heed to the food put out.

I do get neighbour's $^%&^^ cats but less over the bad weather than usual. I have checked the area and there are no dead bird corpses that may be scaring them away.

Is anyone else noticing a lack of bird feeding activity? Is someone up the road from me putting out caviar?

I still have all my regulars - been putting food out every day for years now. Even seen a couple of newbies lately, including a wren - they are not so common nowadays.
Think am gonna have a robin feud soon though. I have had the same family of robins for a long time now, but noticed that new mob seem to be trying to move in. Robins are extremely territorial, so am waiting for the punch up.

I have the same thing here Mel - feeder out for three days with no birds. And thought the same as you - someone in the area must have better food out!

We don't feed any little birds around here - regrettably we don't have the sort of garden that they'd like to spend any time in - and we have too many ferrol (sp) 'parish' cats that don't appear to belong to anyone.

Could it be perhaps that the recent weather has prompted more people to put food out for them? and the end result is they're not as hungry??

    Just a thought.

In this freezing weather the birds need lots of water too, are you making sure they have a water supply? If not, they may be going elsewhere instead of sticking around.
