They're using professional press agencies, so they'll be going to all the "usual suspects" plus some specialist stuff the PR bods will have identified. What you can't do is make anybody use the material they've been sent. A lot of it is down to luck and serendipity - you have to hope your release hits the right desk just at the time that a suitable piece is being put together.
Instead of writing to the editor etc why not wrie to the letters page most magazines have them an i know it is always something i tend to look at even in the most diverse titles , ive tried it a few times but to be honest ive only had 1 printed ad that was in a local paper
but the more letters to more publications the better te chanse of it getting in
They don't advertise but they do mention a commercial venture in relation to a news story.
