    Hiya waterlily

No POST (Power On Self Test) beeps usually imply no CPU clock or a fried CPU. It's not normally RAM as the POST routine works from ROM initially. Could be a power supply fault, though. To be honest I can't remember if graphics cards give out any or no data until their ROMs go through boot, so I can't use this as an indicator.

Without actually putting an ear to the machine I would expect one of two things: motherboard or cpu. If you have an older machine you may have replaced at some time, and the cpu is the same socket type, you may be able to pull it, stick the old one in and see if it boots. You can even do this without a heatsink/fan for a few seconds, to cut down time. OTOH, a bad motherboard may take out this chip too!

Do the hard drive(s) power up ok? Fans? LEDs light up on the box?

Hopefully some techno-nerd better than I may give you a better idea (it's a few years since I was a field engineer, but still build all my own PCs)

First off id say, is this a new or an old PC?

if new take it back, if old, it might be time to get a new one

Although its probably a motherboard or a CPU Issue

Personally id check connections again, unplug and replug, the with another monitor first, then another video card.(I know, if it was thois you would still get POST beeps, but ive come across pcs where the pc speaker has died, hence no beeps)

Then id narrow it down.........check the cpu fan is working, check the cpu is seated. Then if it looks like a motherboard problem, or a knackered cpu, consider which is best and what you use the computer for.

If the computer is used mainly to surf the net, and word process, then id just go and buy a cheap secondhand pc to be honest, as unless buying secondhand parts, it may cost you more to try and replace the old parts, than is worth the while

PMSL, depends exactly what you mean by ne-na-ne-na lol and what it does. Avast has a siren type sound when it finds a trojan or virus, do you mean that? Could be anything really. Have you done the basics like virus & spyware checking, cleaned cache etc. Ccleaner is a very good free programme for clearing carp. If all these are clear, could it be overheating? The fans may be full of dust, it's surprising how much gets in there and clogging everything or the fans may simply have died.

Done the virus, trojan cleaning bits, also done a registry clean.

It sounds like a police siren going off.

Have you tried wiping the hard drive and doing a fresh install. If it's been in storage for so long I doubt there is anything you need on it, or if so backup first.

Unfortunately, it's easier to diagnose if you have the machine in front of you.

You might have a programme monitoring the temps of your motherboard and cpu and the siren, if that is the case then it could well be that the heatsink fan isn't working properly. Have you tried having the side of the case off and checking if the fan is going around? If it's just the fan it's pretty cheap to put right but if it allows the cpu to overheat then it's going to be expensive.

Oh I took the side off alright.....Took one look inside and closed it again, thats when it went in the cupboard. I havent got a clue about the insides of the computer.
