For those looking to start your own website, go for it!
It's not hard or expensive, and you'll have all the freedom in the world to do whatever you want.

I use GoDaddy for webhosting, but you can use whatever host you want. I paid $37.00 to buy my first Domain name, and that allowed me to purchase another Domain name for only $2.00, so both cost under 40.00 for the year.

Next, you will need software to run your store. Each hosting site has there own option for basic ecommerce websites, but I didn't like them because they were too limiting. There are FREE software packages that are very good, and have lots of support. The two I looked at were "osCommerce", and "AFCommerce". You can check out osCommerce at http://www.oscommerce.com/, and AFCommerce at http://www.afcommerce.com

I choose AFCommerce because it was easily customizable as you can see from my two stores. You can do alot with osCommerce, and it has a larger following than AFCommerce, but I wanted more control. For example: yesterday ended my March Madness Sale. Anyone making a purchase could type in a promotion code (it was displayed on the front page) that reduced his or her purchase between 20-50%. Through the store admin I can send out a Newsletter and give registered store members a different promotion code that rewarded them for being a repeat customer. Because it is a stand-alone store I can sell things that can't be listed on ebid, ebay, or any of the major auction sites because of regulations they have to follow.

If you need alot of options like credit card processing, and don't want to use Paypal, you want to look at osCommerce, because AFCommerce that’s a package you have to buy, and you buy each package separately. Both will calculate your shipping, and taxes.


If you can open FrontPage you can create your own WebPages.
The store software does the rest. Don't be afraid to experiment, you can setup osCommerce, and if you don't like it just delete the files and try something else.
