switching from fixed price to auction

With two separate sales, I've tried to change from fixed price to auction format. I can unclick the "accept offer" box, and I can blank out the price, but the box for Fixed Price has a grayed out checkmark in it that will not go away. Meanwhile, the options on the left for opening bid and reserve price are not clickable, they will not accept numbers.

Is there something I'm missing? Or is it not permitted to change from Fixed Price to Auction, or v.v.?

I really would like to make this conversion a lot, in order to conduct weekly auctions with new items each time. If it's just not possible, I'll have to come up with a different marketing strategy.
