"Not that it is anyone's business but mine, but a self-assessment form was filled in and IN THE WORDS OF THE TAX MAN no longer required.

And, yes, what I earned did make a difference ..."

Well if this was the case theres no reason why your items cannot be listed here

The other side of the coin is this:
If you are a business, or deemed to be so, you can claim tax allowances against income. For example:

25% of the cost of buying and running a car that you use for business (or a proportion, if it is only partly used).
    Fuel used (runs to P.O.)

A percentage of the cost of running your home (morgage, heat, light etc) if you run your business from home. A proportion of the cost of your home used as an office or storage.

Accountancy costs. Pay the missus up to £10000 per year, if she is not otherwise working, for keeping the books.
Work clothes, equipment, tools, etc. A fixed amount, or an agreed amount for wear & tear, and replacement.

The cost of the items you sell, plus buying costs, repairs, etc.

If you do it right, the taxman ends up owing you money.

Which is why they don't normally bother with small online sellers. That and the work it causes them.

    What does AYRAB stand for?

Selling inherited items is not a business - I am doing just that in several of my shops. Any inheritance tax due has already been paid (there was none) and each transaction is too small for capital gains tax

I'm sorry that you are abandoning ship, knit wits.. but with the general tone of this board I can see why.

They must be very worried by your post. This is not a climate I am happy with.
the thread highlights the business and tax scenarios are both different aspects of online selling it is the sellers choice as to declare on line if they are a business or not , the tax matter has nothing to do with anyone else,

its just feebay rhetoric spam that still has a lot of people confused,

This thread has answered that for me. If I have to justify my listings to the AYRAB brigade, then I want nothing to do with it. Charity shop can have them - I will move on.

    Quite.
    Please don't do that.

The AYRAB brigade are a self-appointed group who are accountable to nobody, who make it their business to offer gratutious advice(?) to people who do not want or need it. They seem to have migrated from TOS, where trolls and troublemakers thrive.

They have neither the intelligence or wit to see that their comments are not required, but they can only cause harm if we react in the way they wish.

As has been said already, a person's financial affairs are private and nothing to do with anyone else on this or any other site. It is extremely bad manners to comment on or question another person's private affairs, and IMO warrants a formal complaint.

To that end, we should each complain formally to eBid if this forum is being used by those people, for the purpose of causing worry and upset to others.

In the UK, we have never had a version of the Stasi, and we don't tolerate informers. We should not tolerate these people either.

I am entitled to an opinion and if you all want to complain to ebid about me then go ahead.
Do you really think i enjoy having to keep a record on every single item i sell while others who are clearly running a business do not???
And yes ebay probably did force myself and others to register as businesses but the hmrc after looking at my facts said i was a business and had to file a self assessment form each year end of story.
My initial reaction when i saw the bay message was they are trying to force everyone to register as a business or force private sellers out altogether.

And as for being an informer that is just insulting!

And I found your insinuation that I was posing as a private seller both insulting and upsetting.

I hope you think again. You will be missed very much here.
If the AYRAB brigade start their poisonous posts here I'm sure we can see them off by reporting their posts and threads. This may offend some of the ultra-liberals but I think would be a justifiable use of the reporting mechanism.

As regards whether anyone has to pay tax on the proceeds of their online sales depends on whether their TOTAL income from all sources exceeds there personal tax allowance.

On the same lines, there seems to be an ebay attitude creeping into the forums, plus a lot of unnecessary thread reporting.
Don't let them drive you away knit-wits, it just gives them a cheap power thrill.
I've decided to totally ignore the trainee trolls and never engage them in debate. May they wither and fade away
