Perhaps you need to mention in Auctions that goods sent abroad may be subject to local Customs and Excise charges over which you have no control. I've often bought large items from the States and before you know it the UK has added VAT, the Post Office or the courier company have added a handling charge. Blerdy rip off. But I had to pay, not the sender.

    Anyway have a nice Christmas.

This is a good warning to me, I know little about Customs

Is there anywhere I can look up Customs rules for overseas posting?

My T&Cs state that the buyer is responsible for the legality of importing an item and also for any Customs Duty and local taxes that may be applied.

In this case though, as her error gave rise to the charge, Jean has done the right thing by taking responsibility for it.

Hopefully, if following Buttons advice, if the buyer is willing to put in the effort there may be a better end result.

I feel that your part of the bargain was to post and that you did. The customs is not your worry and I see no reason why you should give a discount to the buyer, leaving you so very out of pocket. OK so you made a mistake when filling in the customs form but for you to loose so much on the sale seems very unfair to me. I have always understood that the customs is the buyers responsibility. I am sorry this has worked out the way it has for you.

Filling the form out *right* is part of the seller's responsibilities, surely? If a seller gets the paperwork wrong, and incurs extra charges - there's no way the buyer should have to pay for that in my book (and Jean's too, obviously)

Mel, sadly it wont matter as the total price on the form does not say that part of it is postage...
    Jay..thank you..made my day !
