Thread: the world cant just sit back now

Totally agree. The sooner those at the top table in the UN start to act responsibly the sooner it can gain true worldwide support and respect. The UN could be a remarkable vehicle in situations such as this if personal interests were sidelined for the better good. Possibly even giving them enough respect that the correct action will be taken if necessary to avoid the eventual need for it in some situations.

The problem with the UN Security Council is that it has two members Russia and China that veto everything they don't like or that goes against a regime they support or sell arms to.

The problem with the United Nations is that they only ever give support to peacekeeping operations once some one else has made the peace!

I say its up to the Arabs to stop the violence.
But then they all oppose each other.

And the present regime is a better option than a muslim brotherhood or Tailban or Iraqi style one!

So, how do we, or any of the organizations mentioned stop Russia or China supplying arms to Syria ?

Hoping therfore to stop any military actions by the west.

The Security Council also has the USA who veto any effective measure (ie section 7 resolution) to curb Israel from building settlements on Palestinian land.

Probably the same way that they stop the USA from selling arms to Israel.

At the start of the Second World War, Coventry was an industrial city of around 238,000 people which, like much of the industrial West Midlands, contained metal-working industries.
In Coventry's case, these included cars, bicycles, aeroplane engines and, since 1900, munitions factories.
In the words of the historian Frederick Taylor, "Coventry ... was therefore, in terms of what little law existed on the subject, a legitimate target for aerial bombing".

    Dresden was not.

Hi Ron Can I edit the above for you to say
" to stop ANYONE supplying arms to Syria"

Everyone ought to stop playing politics and deal with the humanitarian situation.

That DOES unfortunately include the use of chemical weapons.

The UN is the only vehicle that can achieve any success PROVIDED the member states put politics aside.

    <Yeah I know it ain't gonna happen.>

Agree, and these wars age way to expensive. We cannot afford to be the World's police, and our military keeps getting cut. Got an idea, send Home Land Security, seems to be lots of them. Give the regular military a rest.
