Thread: Dispelling the myths, a prison visit for youngsters.

  1. #1

Default Dispelling the myths, a prison visit for youngsters.

Dispelling the myths, a prison visit for 13 to 19 year olds.

    The story is here.

I think it's a good idea that they get to see for themself what prison life is like rather than listen to the idiots bragging about it on the streets. Will it make a difference?, I don't know but it's worth a try.

Yes, that looks like an interesting idea. Shame the project title is gibberish, but perhaps it's teen-speak so they understand it! :-)

It's the pen pushers trying to get hip with the kids. lol

You should hear some of the council bosses speak when they're checking out the buildings at work, makes you want to vomit... or slap them. lol

It would be interesting to hear from each individual child that went

their personal views on the visit
Life is serious but taking it too seriously robs you of
    happiness, fun and productivity

Ayup Shezz, yeah it would. I'm guessing that it would have a bigger effect on the younger one's but hopefully they will all be a little shocked by what they see and hear.

I'm not sure how they are collecting feedback from the kids?, probably an essay and a talk back at school I would imagine.

My daughter went back to school at 38 and in one class she was required to visit a prison. She said it was the worst experience of her life and she was scared eventhough there were bars. The prisoners glared at them and she was very uncomfortable.

Now an 18 year old niece is going to the same college and my daughter was heard telling her to be sure to get into that class as it would make a lasting impression and help her with lots of lifes choices.

Not everything that moulds us is from a happy place!

for many years HMP Barlinnie has done an "open day" for staff members families..i took my daughter when she was 16 and she was shocked out of her mind..she could not believe how small the cells were or how high the walls looked from the inside..a real eye opener for anyone at any age..

Brilliant idea and think it will work to put many off, sadly not all.

I am a voluntary prison visitor (don't ask) At present go to one in Dorset and soon will be going to one in Wiltshire.

I have got to know some of the men there and they have always been courteous & respectful to me. Some of the ones I haven't met I would certainly not want to mess with after they are released!

The one I visit is awful, ok so they may have TV's in their rooms & some people on the outside seem to think that is luxurious but the actual prison is YUK and I am always grateful that I can leave.

I never got into trouble as a teenager (or later come to that) but know it would put me off if I had seen how these men live. I am not saying they don't deserve it but I don't see any signs of the 'good life' inside - just total boredom actually.

I have seen this from the other side (albeit by proxy) through many lengthy conversations with someone who had spent several spells in womens' prisons and couldn't cope with living 'on the outside'.

She deliberately committed crimes to try to get a prison sentence and in the end committed a very serious crime against my 91 year old neighbour.

She has now got what she wanted as she is currently serving a sentence of at least 4 years subject to psychiatric reviews.
