Default When does afternoon finish and Evening start?

Strange question as there is no precise answer. For Morning and afternoon you KNOW its 12 o clock. But afternoon to evening is? And Evening to Night? Again no real precise time.

I 'think' evening starts at sunset - so there is no set time as it will vary throughout the year.

I always think the evening starts at what I refer to as "the cocktail hour". The point at which it feels okay to pour your first drink. Mine's six. That's six o'clock, not six drinks!

Oh and night would be the period of darkness between dusk and dawn. Though I have seen it legally defined as 21.00 - 06-00 for the UK.

So your evening starts at 06.00? Must make for a long night.

    Oxford English Dictionary:

    Morning:

    1. a. Originally: the time of the approach or beginning of ‘morn’; the period around sunrise. In later use usually: the early part of the day, esp. from sunrise until noon or lunchtime.

    Afternoon:

    1. a. The time from mid-day to evening.

    Evening:

    1. The coming on of ‘even’, the process or fact of growing dusk; the time at which this takes place, the time about sunset.

    Night:

    1. a. The period of darkness occurring between one day and the next; that part of a 24-hour period during which a place receives no light from the sun; the time between evening and morning.

    Dawn:

    1. a. The first appearance of light in the sky before sunrise, or the time when it appears; the beginning of daylight; daybreak.

    Dusk:

    2. a. The darker stage of twilight before it is quite dark at night, or when the darkness begins to give way in the morning.

Nah, I've usually drunk myself insensible by noon, and the rest of the day's gone in a flash.
