Have you checked to see if your printer is showing ready or idle?
Don't walk in front of me..I may not follow-don't walk behind me..I may not lead-just walk beside me and be my friend.

printer shows as ready and goes to print- after a minute a box pops up and says not communicating but the same is happening with cameras and card reader- the computer is just not finding anything connected via usb.

I have had this problem a couple of times over the years - and each time it is been a faulty motherboard.
Obviously, am not saying that that is what is wrong with yours tho.

It could simply be dust in the port - if you have an air duster aerosol, could be worth a try.

sorry all- had to rush away there.
there are 4 usb ports on the back and 2 on the front-the front ones stopped working about 2 years ago but when the computer was in bits all connections looked ok- the back ones i'm not sure where they are connected to.

Have you looked in device manager to see if there are any problems?

Right click "My Computer" then click "Properties" then click "Hardware" then click "Device Manager"

Worth a try but i am not sure if there will be any problems listed there.
