Thread: One Reason Why Pet Insurance Costs are so High.

  1. #1

Exclamation One Reason Why Pet Insurance Costs are so High.

My dog Whisper has got damages/wrecked ligaments in both front legs.
After 18 months of operations, various drugs & supplements, plus treatments, including hydrotherapy & acupucture, over the last couple of months his condition has more or less stablised.

To keep him mobile he has to wear casts on both front legs pretty much all of the time.
So every day his legs must be dressed first with padding (to stop sores), held in place by a gauze bandage, before the casts are put on, the casts are held together with velcro, but to ensure they don't part, they are then covered with cohesive bandages.

Pet Plan are happy to cover the costs for this providing I buy the bandaging supplies from my Vet (he rarely has enough in stock to supply me), or, an online veterinary pharmacy.

They told me today, if I buy the bandaging elsewhere, where it can be as cheap as a third of the price my vet has to charge they will not pay, even though I have invoices which my vet will endorse as items being necessary for Whisper's ongoing treatment.

They agree I'm buying the same products, for the same reasons,
but even so will not reimburse me for the costs.
It seems absolutely crazy to me, it did to the guy in the call centre too, but aparently that's the way it is.

That seems a little crazy, we are with Tesco's Pet Insurance, and i dont think we have anything that stipulates we have to use a certain vet for products...

Ill have to check, dont fancy being caught out like that

    I usually use petmeds.
If I buy the cohesive bandages from petmeds, their 10 cm bandage is £2.97 a roll (I use approx I roll every 2 days) sometimes more.

My Vet only usually stocks the 5cm which is about £1.50 a roll.

Either option & petplan will pay OK.

    BUT

If I buy the 10cm from pets at home for £2.09, or online a one of the big equine outlets for approx £1.00 a roll, they won't.

    Grrrrrrrrrrr pet insurance

Been paying insurance for two dogs (both have their own) for over 5 years, have never ever made a claim

I had to pay for jabs ( which i agree)
I've paid to have them both chipped ( I agree)

Butttttt when i noticed one of them had bad breath, on checking his mouth i noticeded he had a bad tooth.

Now i buy then dent chews and they have a toothbush to chew as well

Took him to the vets on monday cost me £40+ for them to tell me he has to have the tooth taken out cost of which is £245.00

I said fine I've got insurance, they said no insurance covers dental, unless it had been caused by an accident, read the small print on my policy and there right

now i'm thinking wtf am i paying all that much in insurance, took the gold star one out as well, yet i'm scared not to have

His in today having it done, gotta pick him up after work poor thing

Heck that sounds expensive shezz, it cost me around £100 for my cat to have teeth removed, when they did the procedure they ended up taking seven teeth out

But on the otherhand to add to that, when my cat returned home with his front leg torn off by a car engine, the whole procedure of him been sorted out for that cost me over £700, I'm still paying it now in installments as it was quite recent it happened and i dont have any pet insurance

What a racket to be in then, you can't win either way.
Getting as bad as car insurance, with all the excesses they put on now, makes you wonder why we have that too!!!!!!!!!!
However, if you didn't have it you can bet your bottom dollar something will happen.
Sorry to hear about your problems everyone hope things improve soon!
