First attempt at a layout (not very artistic - which is why I hope someone can do better). As I suggested this I thought I had to, at least, make an attempt. Can't think what the background should be, plain or arty.

I was taught, during my RAF apprenticeship, that it was a Rule and not a Ruler. Call it a Ruler and the instructor hit you with it.
According to the OED both Rule and Ruler are acceptable names for the same thing. A straight edge has no measurement marking - it is purely for drawing a straight line or testing the true of something.

Those were the days! My apprentice instructor only every threatened to cut off the unused part of a hammer if I "throttled" it.
