Smokers: Did you know .....
.... that in the UK from October 1st it will be illegal to smoke inside a vehicle where a person under 18 is present?
Whether or not you agree with the idea, did you actually know about it?
Do you think that changes in the law are advertised enough, for long enough, soon enough?
Would it have made any difference to you if this had been advertised over the last year / six months / three months ?
Please don't fill the thread with replies along the lines of "Well, it doesn't effect me because .....".
Re: Smokers: Did you know .....
the welsh gov have been banging on about it for ages, making out the english gov are following there lead,
this was never debated by the people, big brother decided it was in all are interests,
Re: Smokers: Did you know .....
about time but doubt it will be enforced just like people with mobile
phone in one hand and still driving.
Opposite my house is a toddlers park and I see mothers still smoking
and blowing smoke in their little ones direction.
Re: Smokers: Did you know .....
Sadly the fine will only be £50. No points given unlike using a mobile.
Will not apply to cars that are convertible with the roof all the way down
The way the law will read is here

Re: Smokers: Did you know .....
Will this apply if the only occupant is the driver, aged under 18?

The legal age to smoke is now 18. It is illegal to sell or give tobacco products to anyone under that age. So, in theory, the above scenario should not occur.

From the link given...
Quote:
Both the driver and the smoker could be fined £50. The law applies to every driver in England and Wales, including those aged 17 and those with a provisional driving licence. The law does not apply if the driver is 17 years old and is on their own in the car.
BTW... have known about this for while. The next target will be the home.
There's a minimum age to buy cigarettes, but is there one to smoke? If not then a child could smoke in a car but an accompanying adult wouldn't be allowed to. So if you're stopped just pass the fag to the kid.
Re: Smokers: Did you know .....
This law has been in effect in Canada for over a year. But you never hear about anyone being charged.
Re: Smokers: Did you know .....
Alcohol causes more deaths, damage to society, drain on medical services and policing, harm to children (both by consumption and from its affects on others). Actually, any area I can think of alcohol is more damaging to the consumer and those around them than smoking ever is.
