Please check bonfiresbefore lighting as hedgehogs may be sleeping inside
Re: Please check bonfiresbefore lighting as hedgehogs may be sleeping inside
I'm a volunteer at https://www.facebook.com/pembrokeshi...ital?ref=br_rs and we've recently heard about a mother and babies being burned after the bonfire was checked (the mother died but the babies survived) so the best advice I can give is to move the bonfire to a new location just before being lit and this will ensure that any nests inside will be discovered. BTW any hedgehogs discovered that are under 650gms are too small for hibernating and you should take them to your nearest hedgehog rescue (you can phone our hogspital for advice if you like)

They do help to get a damp bonfire going though...
Haven't seen or heard a hedgehog around here since they built on the land to the rear of my place. Used to get families of them.
Got attacked by a parent once when I tried to help a baby that had got stuck trying to get under a gate. I didn't realise they were that aggressive, but I suppose when defending their baby they will take on anything.

I'm glad you rescued her, time is of the essence with a hedgehog out during the day - it means they're in trouble. Do you know how she's getting on?

I'll bump this thread as it's bonfire night tomorrow but it's applicable whenever you light a bonfire. Just remember to assemble the bonfire on the day you're going to burn it to be sure that nothing's made a nest in it.
