I would also say it was a fruit knife. I've got one that belonged to my grandmother although it is a folding one, more like a penknife with a mother of pearl handle, but they came in leather cases so you could pop them into your handbag for journeys.

Squern - my parents were avid caravanners and National Trust members - and living on Cambs/West Norfolk border they had plenty of choice of where to visit :)
