Ok so gollys are now considered non PC (racist) Why I will never understand as I love gollys, my nan played with them, mum played with them & so did us kids.
Got a few hanging around the house & one on my back pack. Was in town today (lunch break) ANd overheard some older ladies.

Saying arent gollys racist now, and oh I remember playing with them, my son in law is racist doesnt like them coming in etc etc

Now how on earth can a toy that has been around for so long be racist all of a sudden, there was an incident in Bedford about 3 years ago regarding gollys in shop window & some morons took offence to it. And shop placed them inside to shut them up & they still complained.

What is this world coming to. Now no unneccessary accusations please. :eek:

My Nan made Gollies for my daughters copying the Golly character in the Noddy books. To us they weren't "black men" they were just storybook characters like Noddy and Big Ears. She also made Mr. Toad [of Toad Hall] and sold loads of them at bazaars.
I never liked the Black and White Minstrels though. There were enough black singers about, that having white men with black make up on pretending to be negro was just stupid.

Exactly my point Dragonmist how can a toy be deemed racist. I know they have now made them racist and I hear I could be arrested if an ethnic complained about the one hanging from my back pack, but hey its our heritage, why be bullied and hide. Not me sorry :)

Cocksparrer, I did make the point about white men blacked up and pretending to be negro in the Black and White Minstrel shows.
An American friend said that they used blacked up white men because the women were white, and segregation was the order of the day. It was felt a programme with "real" black men, and black women would not be watched. There was a furore when Paul Robeson played Othello in London because he kissed a white woman. [Peggy Ashcroft I think].
I can remember this programme very well. There was only the BBC to watch, and there were no broadcasts early Sunday evening because it was felt that TV might encourage people not to go to church. Pubs didn't open until 7 PM for the same reason. The programmes were pretty dire anyway. Sunday Night at the London Palladium for instance. Tired old music hall acts, and the Tiller Girls bobbing and high kicking across the stage. You always had tap dancers too. Trouble is that nowadays the Royal Variety Performance has much of the same stuff dragged out of mothballs for the annual event.

I used to collect gollys from the marmalade jars. I used to where them on my school tie I had loads. When I moved to Northamptonshire I was cornered in the girls loos by a group of black girls calling me a racist. I was only 14 and I never knew the significance of them - I just liked the look of them I always assumed they were toy charecters. I never wore them again :(

When I was first at school we read stories about Epominandas. Definitely politically incorrect. Full of Dis and Dat, and he was portrayed as really stupid. Then there was Topsy. I can't remember which books she was in, but I do remember reading how, when someone said she was a big girl, she replied " I guess I just growed". Topsy had her hair done in corn braids and was a typical piccaninny stereotype. Years later there were complaints about this stereotyping. Now nearly every child of african descent has cornbraids, and looks like the piccaninny image that they so hated..... but of course you aren't allowed to say that. You couldn't make it up.

But we dont go crazy about the other characters being non PC do we, then theres the other author who wrote oh dammit cant remember..........ah yes is it lord of the flies. Where bunch kids get stuck on an island all separate & fatty is defended by one of the other kids but killed in the end if I remember right. But then I suppose thats Democracy, the other leader was all for killing the so called weaker kids but then I suppose that can be called communism, wasnt idi amin & pol pot communists or have I got my politics mixed up (no surprise there). What im saying LOTF has also been banned, I used to read that in school it was part of the curriculum, but not anymore, our kids are now being forced to learn asian languages, yet our country is English, the asians should learn our language and not force feed our kids. Theyre teaching all sorts of religions at my son's new school, but I told them he is not to learn them the only one he can learn is Christianity and hes to be sent to another lesson if theyre doing budda, judaism and what have you.

Its the so called Minority that complains about them maybe they feel threatened by a Golly. I love my gollys. And if I get arrested for the one on my back pack then who cares, will just add another to my list rofl.
