View Full Version : A thread for the silent majority?

edited 17th Feb 2009. Astral this thread is two years old. is there any reason you've linked to it?
Is it just me, or is there some really .. sorry the only word I can think of is..stupid! posts on the forum just now? I know it's the KT- free speach and all that ( that's why I can post this!) - but it's turning into a version of Viz  No wonder some people have stopped using the forums here.
I'm sure there's loads who love all the dirty jokes and stuff, but I bet there's a few others who feel it's gone a bit OTT. This thread is for that silent majority ;)

I'm with you on this one HannaHolly There seems to be little of any real substance on KT, whilst I can appreciate a couple of 'silly' threads for a bit of fun, there is very little of consequence posted, and every thread seems to be used for posting for the sake of posting.
Any one visiting these forums would hardly think this is trying to be a serious selling platform. Is it any wonder some struggle with sales.

I agree chat about anything, but so many banal threads are they all really neccesary, couldn't it just be confined to a couple which the sane amongst us could leave you to it and just read the others. At the moment one has to read dozens of posts just to pick out the odd one that may be of interest.

Hmmmm.
The KT is just one tiny part of a HUGE forum.
there are sections here for almost anything you can think of.
I thought KT was for members to lark about in so that the other sections could be kept serious..i.e. the help sections ...would be rather bad taste to joke around in there as it would be the all important newbies first port of call.
(Just my opinion)

I agree! and the 'about anything' might include threads commenting on how banal some threads on the KT threads are!
Seriously Debs, my gripe isnt about the long friendly chit chat threads. What tipped the scales for me tonight was a brand new poster posting a really bad taste crude joke as their first posting on the site. I assume they read the other postings on the forum and felt that was the most appropriate way to introduce themselves!
Gazza and Mark have put the 'welcome to new members' thread in the KT. How many potentual new members ( and new buyers!) are scared off by the sheer number of jokey type postings?
Anyway i'm not campaigning for thr removal of the KT- or for the removal of anyone! I'm just voicing an opinion- even if it is apparently from the grave ;)

The problem with people these days is that everybody claims to know their rights, but very few people understand the responsibilities which go hand-in-hand with them.
YES, people have the RIGHT to post on almost any topic on the KT. However, they also have a RESPONSIBILITY to refrain from behaving in a manner which is upsetting or distressing to other members.
Unfortunately, Hugh (Ziggy/Tony/Bigus/etc) and his like, couldn't care less about other forum members, just as long as they can do what they like, when they like, even if it wrecks the forum or causes people to leave.

What's the point? You clearly have no problem with the sheer volume of, and content of, the stupid threads that have appeared since Hugh did, so why should you have any understanding of what people are upset about? You either can't or don't want to see the damage which has been done to the forum in the last couple of weeks, so nothing I write is going to open your eyes. All that can happen is you take a contrary view and a pointless argument begins.
As for those who have left, it is up to them to reveal any details they wish to regarding their reasoning. Comments and explanations have been made in private - some of which I have been privy to - but I am not in a position to reveal what was told to me in confidence. So either you take my word for it, or you don't. Either way I'm not going to argue with you about it; I know the truth of the matter.

I don't think it is confined to the KT either - it is happening on the 'serious' sides too. I'd also just like to add that hugh was not one of the three I was thinking of (I don't find him particularly threatening or aggressive) and I've not PM'd anyone about this subject.
It is not about an 'ignore button' for me, it is about the overall impression the boards are giving out at the moment and the OTT newbie thread is a prime example of the knock on effect - talk about shock value.
I push eBid very hard on the other side and say that the forums are the best place for help and advice, but many serious sellers could easily get totally the wrong impression and walk away and that bothers me.
madelaine
19th July 2007, 08:21 AM
I totally agree with the op - no-one is going to join ebid because the tone of the forums is too nice and friendly but many will take one look at the vulgar and sometimes aggressive posts here and never return.
The ignore button is quite handy but then someone quotes the person you are ignoring <grin>
kengillam
19th July 2007, 09:02 AM
This isa the whole point, eBid is primarily about selling and buying, the forums can be a pleasant diversion, however the general tone and content of the forums reflect on how eBid is perceived as a trading platform. The present trend would seem to indicate that it is a place frequented by immature teenagers. This hardly encourages people to continue trading here.

Its not really just about the rules Damian - its more this Holier than thou attitude to anyone who posts anything vaguely critical of Ebid. Because some of you have been here a while you think you own the place and run these forums. Its a bit like the Security Guard mentality - he has sat on the front gate for ten years and thinks he is the Head of the company.
I don't mind if you single me out for special attention, Crusales. It doesn't bother me that you choose to ignore all the other people who also took offence to the negative, unhelpful, sometimes incorrect, willfully ignorant, often arrogant, frequently trouble-making messages that you chose to post in tirade after tirade against the site, its users and the management who are generous enough to allow you the chance of selling here. The reason I don't mind is that I am strong enough to stick my head over the parapet and risk making a target of myself when I see something happening that I dislike. If other people choose not to raise their heads and speak up when people like yourself are kicking off, that's their choice and I don't blame them for making it; not everybody can cope with the come back from people like yourself.
So you feel free to continue being a bitter, unsuccessful little man. Continue blaming those around you, the site itself or the universe in general for your failings if that's what it takes for you to get through the day.
Me? I'll just continue speaking up when I choose, reporting those who break the rules if I feel like it when I spot them, and posting in these forums.

If Damian is being singled out for special attention and accused of having a Holier than thou attitude to anyone who posts anything vaguely critical of Ebid, then that's it for me on these boards.
IMHO Damian is often the voice of reason on these boards and there are others who will basically tell you to leave eBid (I'm being polite here) for saying anything vaguely critical about eBid and God forbid you should dare mention eBay.
I guess I just don't fit in here as I believe in treating others as I'd like to be treated. I stopped posting before, but that's it for me this time.

The fact is the forums are here for everyone who uses Ebid and just occasionally perhaps we should all bite our tongues and let others have their say without jumping down their throats.
As for the influx of recent irritants - if you dont like them just use ignore ! thats why its there.
The problem with the ignore button is that some of the numpty posters calm down and come out with some constructive threads. I can think of at least 2 that this has happened to after they have had an eBid grilling.
The problem with negative posting is that it gets picked up by the spyware that probes the forums and shows ebid in a bad light. We should be trying to promote the place not wreck it. If criticism is made it is better for it to be constructive rather than destructive.
Damian: Are you sure QCP isn't saying that because he enjoys baiting you?

19th July 2007, 07:23 PM
It is not a simple matter of using the ignore button. I can stop visiting the forums but I cannot stop potential customers from visiting. This board is not a good advert for the site and its users. Anyone who objects to puerile, vulgar humour is pilloried as a miserable killjoy. I try to make my comments as a businesswoman who wants to sell stuff here!

It doesn't just show eBid in a bad light. A seller's personality comes through via their posts - negative, positive, moany, helpful, professional, unprofessional and so on. It ALL gets picked up by Google.

Look will you two stop squabbling. I have also criticised ebid when I felt it appropriate, however there are ways of doing it rather than just 'slagging it off'. As madelaine says we are trying to sell on here and whilst presenting a rose tinted view is also counter productive there is no need for totally negative views either. It is fair and balanced observation that is the most helpful.
Conduct in these forums tells people a lot about you as a seller, some would seem to not value their reputations or else post under other ID's, those of integrity use their own selling ID's. So let's have an end to the petty bickering and concentrate on the real job in hand and that is making this place a viable alternative to ebay.

Yes, he is. He's stated that he is only here because he wants to annoy me. However, as I was accused of being the reason he left, I had to mention that the opposite was true - even if the only reason it is true is because of Potty's negative intent.

I too hope IKEAPLUS and others don't leave the forums.
Personally I don't like the 'smutty' threads at all and usually avoid threads started by people who enjoy that kind of stuff. ( so please don't keep starteing thread after thread..!)
I'm not too keen on some of the moaning - "why can't I sell anything' threads either- especially when they're written in an agressive rather than constructive way.
However.. there will always be respresentatives of all types of people on a forum, and for me there's room for everyone!
It's when there's 'too much' of something it becomes an issue. So if we ALL ( me included!) learn to have a bit more tolerance and consideration for each other there'll be more variety and less infighting on the forums.
:) I must be in a mellow Friday mood today ;)
madelaine
20th July 2007, 07:45 AM
Your mellow mood, Val, does not infect the smutties. They will post on every thread and, if it suits, attack anyone they take against. OK, so it is only posts on a forum but, as I have already said, it is part of a business site and I am here to sell. If I were not, I would not bother with this forum at all because I wouldn't care about the state of it. It would simply be a "room" I didn't bother to enter.
As for the "why can't I sell?" threads, repetition seems to be an inevitable part of any internet forum. The Scottish Genealogy boards are full of people not realising that Scottish Law is not the same as English Law (or even American Law!) as well as people insisting that McTavish is not the same name as MacTavish (before general literacy they are interchangeable) and this board has always been full of "I've listed an item for three days and no-one has bought it" and "Why don't we all tell our customers about ebid?" not to mention "Why don't we each subscribe £5 to pay for an ad in one of the breaks in Coronation Street?"
The best way to deal with them is to answer, politely, point them to other similar threads and then move on.

In a strange way, the eBid forums are in my opinion, one of the most entertaining in auctionland. Lots of drama and soap opera - lovers' tiffs, warring factions, toilet humour enthusiasts, grumpy old men and women (myself included), drama kings and queens, the rational, the totally irrational and so on....quite a few larger than life characters...lots of soap opera. Tantrums, tiaras, and also some of the most helpful and lovely folk around. Keeps me coming back anyway!!

I am sorry to say that I sometimes find some of these threads funny and I take them in a light hearted way..life is already stressful and uptight at times as it is without giving away my sense of humour too...
I agree the Post the other day by I forget( a sopposed newbie) who but about masterbating was not needed and I didnt find it funny ...
BUT you just have to ignore it....once you start replying you are entering into the game...if it doesnt amuse you ...move on...
I like ebid i always have although at the moment I dont have much listed for sale....I am considering starting something if I loose my job and Ebid is where I will come to do it...
I really dont think these forums are the cause of people bidding on my low cost items, not paying or responding to emails..and then coming up with excuses not to pay...I think that is just ignorance and because they think they can get away with it on Ebid..although I always leave a neg...this happens on a one sale..one non payer.ratio..
There is a mix of people in all walks of life..
Forums are just another meeting place..
This of course is just my opinion...

I think it would be a good idea if there was a button on each thread/post that you can press if you want to report a post.
Most boards have something like this to make it quick and easy. An email to support is maybe one step too hard (!) for a lot of people! You do get malicious button pressing sometimes, but it does deter a lot of abuse too, as the board managers can see more easily who is always over stepping the mark or who keeps pressing the button! It is the board manager's decision though whether or not to pull a post. :)

Fran, no-one said that the shortage of bidders on ebid was because of the forums and I do not reply to the threads I dislike, but what I do think is that if I were new and I arrived here and, before signing up, took a look at the forums (and the stats mean I would start with KT), I would leave in a hurry.
I'm not miserable - I just don't care for endless smutty humour.

Nobody here has said anything about objecting to funny threads - they are one of the best things about the KT and you can have a great laugh on here.
I'm not miserable either (I used to post on the joke thread daily), but I do not like it when people are seriously smutty, vulgar or use four letter swear words or are down right aggressively abusive
As the OP said this seems to be on the increase - that's what I'm not happy about, as these boards are public not private as many have pointed out.

It is just as well we don't have more strict rules on here. On one of the boards I browse they have a policy that things have to be submitted in English (no gobbledy gook or text speak). Someone started posting in text language and got thoroughly flamed for it. There is one character who will quote from mis spelt posts correcting the errors.
Also they have Mods (something that this board is getting to need) who don't take any crap from people, you get a warning then you are out.

Quite right!
They should have let Hitler do what he wanted, too. Prudish gits complaining merely because he wanted to force his views and beliefs on everyone else. How dare they complain? He was just having a good time and those prudish people had to interfere instead of following the principal of live and let live - or die, if you were Jewish, of course.
So people round here aren't quite as bad as Hitler, they just want to take over the forum instead of the whole of Europe. But the principal is the same.

It's not about prudish - it's about having a site which is a good advert for ebid. If you want to post "adult" (as Michael Flanders put it many years ago "meaning Filthy") stuff, why not do it on an "adult" board?

Perhaps not. But call it what you like, when the minority ignore the wishes of the majority and continue to do things which cause problems, it is time for something to be done to redress the balance.
there is a ignore button if you get offended that much
You've just proven that you are missing the point entirely. Have you not read the comments of people on this thread who are against the clown postings? Did you not understand the reasoning behind the objections? The ignore button will not solve the problem.

The rules they have on Heroes & Villans are no more restrictive than what we have on here. The only difference is that at H&V there are people to enforce them.
Most of the Mods are long-term posters such as Damian (who from what I have seen quite often does the job unofficially).
The Mods could also keep an eye on inappropriate posting (wrongly placed threads and re-assign them).

How can you possibly know who reports things on this board? You can only guess.
but, more seriously, the fact that most posts not being offensive to most people is missing the point. The board has up until the last few days been smutty and offensive a lot of the time. This doesn't look good. Have you forgotten that this is not a stand-alone discussion forum? It's a forum attached to an auction site! It's part of a business! I don't know who has reported anyone, nor did I claim to madelaine; I was refering to the times when DS has intervened and tried to calm things down.
I agree with you about the content of the boards, there are plenty of sites out there for the larking around. That is where the Mods would come in, if we also had a section for OT things like that, they could be moved to there; leaving the rest of the board as it is. From what I have seen some of the more recent arrivals don't seem to have alot to contribute to the business side of this site. That unfortunately is the price to pay when the site and the staff get busier. Hence we need mods to keep things in line.
Alot of other boards have mods and any problems are quickly dealt with.

And this is the thread for.....
THE SILENT MAJORITY
ROFL...................................
First off, genius, I neither started the thread nor chose its title. So you can put that particular whipping stick away.
Damian imho you are the not only the most opinionated person I have ever met on a forum - you are quite easily the most opinionated person I have ever met in my life....
And most of the arguements on here involve you.
Why can't you see - YOU are the one causing most of the problems here.
Secondly, what is wrong with not only having an opinion, but also having the courage to stand up and state that opinion loud and clear? Are you trying to tell me that I am not allowed to state my opinion, that you want me to sit down and be quiet? Are you trying to censor me?
Thirdly, I choose to get involved with issues raised here. If they evolve into discussions or, as you put it, arguments, then I cannot take the blame for the comments of all the people involved in any thread.
I am NOT the one CAUSING most of anything. However, if you think that is true, then feel free to email management with your request for having my account suspend or removed. I am sure that you will not tell them they cannot have an opinion on the matter.
Now, Crusales-by-any-other-name, It seems that you are the one straying into territory which could be deemed as libellous. So watch yourself or it may be my turn to threaten you with a fantasy solicitor.

Can I suggest that folk just calm down and act sensibly, as madelaine says this is a selling site and to potentially damage that with inappropriate posts is wrong. As regards to subjects I agree it is open, but at times some things are inappropriate and should be subject to SELF restraint.
It is also irritating when there are numerous consecutive one line posts in a short space of time. Perhaps more thought is required before putting fingers to keyboard.
As regards txt speak and spelling, provided it is reasonably coherent I don't think grammar 7 spelling p[olice are good for a forum. Like most things it is about having a little common sense and consideration for ALL users. If we all applied such consideration I am sure the place will run just fine.
damian_steele
22nd July 2007, 05:28 PM
Damian,
To date in 6 months I have made 40 posts. You have over 6000.....
These numbers speak volumes..... you just cannot resist a argument. You are virtually an obsessive poster.
Crusales/Jumbly/whatever_name_you_change_it_to_next,
your opening statement is an outright lie - as well you know.
Your post count stands at 40 merely because you deliberately and methodically went back through the threads you had posted on and deleted your posts. You did this after a large and long lasting series of argumentative and accusatory threads - many of which were started by yourself - before you finally threw all your toys out of the pram, went on a deleting spree and had a huff.
As I recall, the vast majority of your posts - prior to your deliberate removal of the evidence - were negative in nature and argumentative and/or aggressive in tone. So perhaps you should examine your own behaviour before casting aspersions on other posters. What is the saying about living in glass houses?
However, the number of posts a person makes in an arbitrarily assigned period is unimportant. It is the content of the posts that makes the difference.
Now, aside from lies, false accusations, unproven arguments and negative commentary, do you have anything sensible and on-topic to post? Or will you just continue trying to bait me?
