How do you buy your prints?

i am just wondering, when you buy prints, on an auction site apart from the image itself what else are you looking for?
i.e mounted prints,
mounted and framed.

I am toying with the idea of selling complete framed prints,
However i would be limited to the size of complete frame due to carriage cost.
Complete frame = print-mount-frame-glass-back+fixture
any suggestions would be most appreciated.

By trade i'm a framer, so moulding etc is always available

Hello lowcost, I'm not a buyer I'm another framer (at least in part). I've always found it difficult to sell either mounted or framed prints on the internet. I don't know why exactly. I gave up trying in the end and I now sell just the print, original advert etc. I will probably have another crack at selling framed prints later.

I am selling unframed mounted prints as well as my cards, but I was wondering how they would go - no sales so far - so I was just going to wait and see.

Do either of you sell mounts and frames online?

I have had difficulty in getting frames that are of a reasonable cost to be able to make a small profit when selling them with my prints, the same with the mounts.

I would be interested in getting some prices if you do a internet service to see how they compare with the ones I get locally.

You could do separate listings for mounting and frames and then the buyer could choose how complete they want the print.

Hello Jo, I've only listed around 500 antique prints so far but I've sold a reasonable number (probably as many as I would have done in my E*ay shop). I have included a few that are mounted but I don't think any of those have gone yet.

I haven't listed any frame components online yet, I've got my hands full with just the prints. I can make both mounts (single, double, with wash lines etc.) and frames to order but I'm a bit out of touch in terms of the cost of materials at the moment. I'm just setting up my machines again after a gap of several years. Once I've visited my materials supplier I'll be in a better position to advise.

As a framer i can arrange for mounts to be cut to any apperture and most size's required and to most colours, though judging by your cards i would recommend a white mount slightly textured.

Frame details= moulding type-size-glass-backing board pinned L or P.
suggested moulding sample can be sent


Mount card= colour-size-apperture. sample available(not a full mount for cost reasons unless agreed).

if you could let me know the size you usualy purchase, then i can through some figures at you.

Also could you let me know if you are able to purchase the glass seperatley.

Selling framed - we had to ship out framed prints WITHOUT insurance because none of the carriers would cover for it and the Post Office refused point blank. I think damage in transit is a huge risk and, with no insurance, it is fraught with the potential for refund claims and clawbacks.

On the other hand, one print we risked having sent to us the glass actually smashed in transit and totally destroyed the print (which was a fairly expensive signed, limited edition) and there was no chance of compensation.

Just thought the above may be worth considering and hope it helps.

Thanks for this information. I was considering doing complete frmed prints myself, but was wondering if there would be problems due to the fragility of the glass - so you have answered my question!!

I will just stick to mounted prints for the moment, and sell the framed ones in the shops down here!

Although I am considering buying frames without glass online (lowcostprints) as they seem more cost effective than shops here! :D

I had a print framed locally with Perspex instead of glass. I don't know if buyers would like this for fine art prints, but for budget prints it might be acceptable. It's lighter and less fragile in transit, too.
