View Full Version : PLEASE stop the comparisons to 'Feebay'/'Greedbay' etc..

I have invested in a Lifetime Gold Membership in eBid. I have already bought several items from sellers on this site and have always paid immediately after auction close. I will always look to buy something off here first before using any other website. Therefore, I think it is fair to say I have the best interests of eBid at heart.
Having said that:
What I find *really* annoying is the majority of Forum responses to new or potentially new buyers who *dare* to ask a question or who might have had a bad experience.
I have seen so many posts in this Forum along the lines of "..this guy ripped me off...", "..how do I pay by Paypal...", ..."fake items..." etc.. only for it to be answered with "..it happens on eBay too.."
STOP BEING SO DEFENSIVE!
PLEASE remember eBay is the market leader many times bigger that eBid and is already making £Billions.
eBid needs to *listen* to the customers and make changes in order to offer something different.
I probably buy more than I sell, but I won't buy much off eBid that costs over £10 because I don't trust the site regulation just yet (and before anyone tells me "it happens on eBay too" I've not had 1 problem in 7+ years).

You, know I'm glad you said that because I also come from e-bay where I sold quite a bit. Here on e-bid I don't do so well, having said I like this site. I'm not sure as a seller what to do to increase my sales. My first week here I had a customer bid on something and tell me someone was using his ID....well I left neutral feed back...telling the truth and boy did that back fire in my face....So far I have had 3 non paying customers, which up-set me as I am a single mom trying to support my daughter....But LIFE GOES ON and I will keep trying. I only left e-bay because of the fees...got to me more than I could afford with the amount of items I list...just food for thought....bad things happen on all auction sites....so we just need to hang in there....

I see your point BUT ... A/ Comparisons are natural in any area of life be they business or otherwise.
B/ So are you saying that it is OK for ebay to take part in / turn a blind eye to etc ... all things dodgy and incorrect BECAUSE they are a multi £Billion company ( as you say ) ?
If you are then i have to STRONGLY disagree.
You expect a small company like ebid to take the moral highground whilst ebay flourishes and soars inspite of their lack of consience.
A strange analogy, i have to say.

I'm at work so I'll have to be quick, but briefly:
My point is I see a LOT of responses to questions/complaints along the lines of "..that happens on eBay too you know...". Well so what? 'Free to List' might be a great incentive for sellers, but in order to encourage buyers then yes I do believe eBid needs to claim the "moral high ground" as you say.
I'm not saying it is OK for eBay to carry on as they do, but it is a fact they were there first and are doing very well.
Competition offering something different ('Free to List') is welcome and healthy in any marketplace, but surely imitation ("it happens there too") is no good to anyone?

It sounds very idealistic. In todays enviroment i dont know how realistic it is though.

It needs to be taken into account that many of the things that buyers (on all auction sites) complain about cannot be dealt with by the site's owners. Legal matters relating to theft, fraud, misleading advertising and so on are the jurisdiction of the police and trading standards. What, exactly, do people expect the site owners to do, compensate them or refund the lost money even though it was someone else who ripped the seller off?
Those who have taken the trouble to read the announcements will see that eBid's policies and procedures are within the law and actually excede those followed by some other sites. Despite rumours to the contrary, the management do listen to complaints and actually sort a great many of them out behind the scenes without causing a fuss, but because those ones don't get into the forums we don't hear about them.
Perhaps people should take the time to realise that a great deal of work does go into helping people resolve their issues on this site and the vast majority of users here have a positive experience.

I see it like if you went into BIRMINGHAM BULLRING ( for eg ) and bought from a shop , say DEBENHAMS for the sake of argument ... and you had problems with the sales person, the purchase etc ................... who would you complain to ? Debenhams or the Bullring ?

Maybe not but if Debenhams were shown to be doing nothing about it how long would the Bullring allow the shop presence.
It might remain on commercial grounds, but wait a minute, that sounds a bit like somewhere I know. Ignore the scams we're making money!

Damian - I do take on board your points re: the site owners and complaints, but I'm talking more about the repsonses I see from a number of well-established members on the Forums.
Using FairyWishes example let's say I went to the Pallasades in Birmingham and I bought an item from a shop where they stated they were selling 32" widescreen TVs for £25, but for one day only. However, when I got the box home I found it was full of bricks. I then returned to the shop to find it had closed down. Naturally I would go to the information point at the Pallasades (i.e. the equivalent of this Forum) to ask for advice. If the only responses I got were "It's your own fault - surely you must have known it was a rip-off?" or "The same thing happens at The Bullring you know?" it wouldn't exactly endear me towards the Pallasades.
The vast majority of people who come here (both buyers and sellers) do so with a knowledge, experience and familiarity of using "the other site" so even an apparently small difference between the buying/selling/paying process on here can cause initial confusion and frustration.
I'm not saying it happens all the time, but there can be a tendency for the Forum replies to be fairly offhand, defensive or dismissive especially if any perceived critisism is levelled at eBid.

You may be right, Toady. I think a big part of the reason for that could be because the regulars are tired of replying to the same old questions. Perhaps if people actually bothered to use the SEARCH function they'd find answers to these commonly asked questions. Or even if they bothered to read the officials FAQs it would help. But instead of helping themselves and showing a bit of initiative, the majority of complainants just seem to want to have a whinge and blame everybody else for what is quite often their own stupidity.
Quite honestly a lot of the time I think people get replies that are far more friendly and helpful than they deserve. For example, when I see people saying "I bought this £10,000 item for £50 and now I'm ****ed off because it's a fake" I can't help wondering how they even managed to get online in the first place, but whereas I might actually tell them that, there are others here who do a magnificent job of holding back without pointing and laughing.

I'm one of the guilty regulars ( I think!) I suppose some of the things that put me on the defensive are:
New users who talk about EBID sellers as if we are all thieves and crooks,:mad:
New users who expect EBID to work exactly like EBAY but without the fees
New users who post negative comments on help and advice boards - then ignore any help or advice given.
New sellers who want sales without putting the work in to get themAll that said, I take your points on board and will try to resist mentioning EBAY in my responses ( unless the poster has mentioned it first;) ).

HannahHolly, Damian - I didn't post with any particular members in mind and as a relative 'newbie' it is good to get this alternative perspective from 'regulars' so thankyou :)
I'm ashamed to say I've managed to tick off the first three items in your list during my first few weeks on this Forum. It is something I'm aware of (and have been made to be aware of!) and will strive to cut down on the negativity.
I suppose there is a culture shock when first using eBid and compared to the other site a lot more work is required to get results. Personally I'm not convinced this site is right for me due to amount of time I would need to put in to get a few sales (I have a 'regular' job with long hours and other commitments), but you pay your money (or lack of it) and take your choice.
However, I do really like the idea of eBid and I think some competition to the behemoth is essential so I will persevere for now.
