It seems almost certain that an attack on Iran will happen.
It is most likely that the Israelis will start it with possible help from the Americans - which will bring us into it even more.
However, given that the obvious American desire is to also steal the Iranian oil reserves - which are huge - they will not want to contaminate the area. They have already stated that Iranian facilities are too deep and too well protected for existing "bunker busters" to deal with and that a TACTICAL nuclear weapon would be required. However, existing tactical nukes would make the area uninhabitable and unworkable. That is why they are currently petitioning Congress for funds to research and build the next generation of weapon which will combine the qualitites of a deep terrain bunker buster and a tactical nuke. It is unlikely that such a weapon could be created within two years - about the same timespan that experts predict the Iranians having the capability to build their own nuclear weapon.
The big question is whether Israel will wait that long.

"Top-ranking Americans have told equally top-ranking Indians in recent weeks that the US has plans to invade Iran before Bush's term ends. In 2002, a year before the US invaded Iraq, high-ranking Americans had similarly shared their definitive vision of a post-Saddam Iraq, making it clear that they would change the regime in Baghdad."
- Calcutta Telegraph 25-9-05
Add to all this the fact that Jack Straw has already begun denying that either the US or the UK plans to attack Iran - the same way it was denied that anyone would attack Iraq - and things are looking pretty bleak.
(TACTICAL nukes: Tactical nuclear weapons are MUCH smaller than strategic nuclear weapons - the sort delivered by ICBMs or SLBMs. Those weapons are generally thought to be in the range of 1-3 megatons, whereas the tactical weapons we are talking about are "only" 30-50 kilotons. The weapon used on Hiroshima had an approximate yield of 10 kilotons.)

It's millions of people. Iran is about three times the size of Iraq.
However:
That really depends on who you believe.
The official line is that the Iranians have a covert nuclear weapons program and may be able to build and deliver a nuclear weapon within two to five years.
There is significant data which could be taken to support this theory including non-compliance with the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty and refusal to allow the IAEA inspectors free access to their nuclear facilities. The Iranians even went so far to completely dismantle, flatten, destroy and bury one facility rather than let it be examined.
Can you imagine trusting a nation that has already stated it intends to destroy its enemies by whatever means available, with a nuclear weapon?
Alternatively this is just the excuse the Americans have been looking for to invade another country and steal its oil wealth.

Damned expensive, I'm afraid.
We also have many of the highest utility bills in the country along with the lowest wages - which sucks, big time.
You weren't thinking of moving away from London by any chance?
Or are you after bunker space?

Oh, I see. They have found the missing weapons of mass destruction. It was just that George Dubya Bush didn't realise that Iraq and iran weren't the same place!

Oh, I see. They have found the missing weapons of mass destruction.
No, unfortunately it's not that simple.
Despite sanctions being in place for over two decades, the Iranians have indeed been building their own nuclear program. Much of the information and many of the componants necessary for this has been supplied to them illegally. There is no doubt that they are now capable of producing enriched nuclear material. The argument is what they intend to do with it.
The Iranians state that their until recently secret nuclear program is for peaceful generation of electricity. This is despite the fact that they have failed to report numerous things - such as huge factories and processing plants - to the appropriate nuclear regulatory bodies even after they were proven to have such a program. The Iranians have also failed to allow proper and full inspections of nuclear and related sites - failed to the point of deliberately obstructing the inspectors.
They have also just handed control of their entire nuclear program over to their military.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has given his military control of Tehran’s nuclear program, the Washington Times reported today.
Revolutionary Guard commanders also have been installed in several key political posts, according to a report issued yesterday by an exiled Iranian opposition group.
“The military under the new president is firmly in control of the nuclear program and the nuclear negotiations with the United Nations and the West,” Mohammad Mohaddessin, chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, told the Times yesterday.
The personnel changes “make it less and less credible that Iran is pursuing nuclear programs for peaceful uses,” he said.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamanei instituted the changes in order to “eliminate all bureaucratic and political obstacles to obtaining nuclear weapons,” Mohaddessin said (David Sands, Washington Times, Oct. 5 (http://www.washingtontimes.com/world/20051005-121400-6491r.htm)).
Even the Russians are preparing for nuclear war:
Russia Conducts Nuclear Strike Exercise
Russia yesterday used nuclear-capable Topol missiles in an exercise designed to test the military’s readiness to use nuclear weapons in a strike against an enemy, ITAR-Tass reported.
“Over 2,500 servicemen and over 200 pieces of hardware, including 10 Topol strategic mobile rocket systems, took part in the command and staff exercises in the Vladimir missile division,” according to a military press statement.
“The main aim of the exercises was to check the readiness of missile crews to disperse on terrain and inflict a nuclear strike against a likely enemy, as well as to evaluate the real state of military and mobile readiness of officers, a series of missile divisions and military units,” Col. Gen. Nikolai Solovtsov, commander of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, said in the release (ITAR-Tass, Oct. 5).
Things appear to be moving at speed in a direction which is not good.

To gain access to my bunker you need to pass the test created by my OH.
It goes like this:
Are you my OH?
Are you me?
No?
Then you don't get in.

Rumours have been flying around for a few years that Bush had his eye on Iran next, was just looking for any excuse or pretext to get in there and do it.

Now our government is formally accusing Iran of supporting terrorism and supplying the terrorists with skills and explosives which have been used to target our troops.
I wonder if this is the start of a campaign to "educate" the public so that we support Bush and Blair when they go to war, again.

Since the start of the year it has been a slow drip-drip-drip of information/misinformation, it's been obvious to a lot of people that Iran would be next, the warnings from Bush and Blair and their followers.
Still, at least when they get a nice, big oil pipeline across the area and steal all the oil, they will get the satisfied feeling that all the tens or hundreds of thousands of people they killed, would have died for a noble purpose - so we can all pollute the planet just a little bit more.

Not guilty, m'lud.
However, I seriously doubt that it would have made much difference who was in. These events appear to be the result of wheels that have been turning for quite some time and I suspect that whoever is in will either joins the hands pushing the wheels or get crushed under them.
