A few weeks ago I received a text which appeared to come from my bosses mobile number - It said that there had been a serious complaint made about me and I had been suspended pending investigation. I stormed into her office, threw my phone on her desk and went ballistic, only for her to deny all knowledge. A short time googling and to my amazement I found that it's really easy to "spoof" an SMS to make it appear to come from any mobile number you want to, or even from no number at all.

Since then, my boss has received my resignation via text (not sent by me) and I have had various other messages supposedly from my boss. The kicker came this afternoon, when a manager at a major client company got a single word message appearing to come from my mobile. The word? Tosser! As you can imagine, this has caused me some professional and personal embarrasment.

So, beware!! That SMS you're reading could have come from anywhere in the world, and not from your boss, friends, coworkers or partner!

Has anyone else experienced this?

Whoever sent the spoof messages has got to be someone who knows you and has access to your phone or address book, otherwise how could they know where to send the message's and how could they know to send a complaint from your bosses number ?. It's way too specific for it to be a general scam/spoof.

Sending spoof SMS's is supposed to be quite easy when done online, I've never looked into it myself but I have heard stories.

Just done a quick search and found this within 20 second's...
http://www.spoofsms.co.uk/. There are probably more out there which are worse if I could be bothered to dig deep enough.

Getting back to your spoof SMS, it does sound to me like it's definitely someone you know.

To add to this, I heard that if you have bluetooth your phone can be hyjacked, a virus can be sent to your phone. all information can be retreved from you phone and that includes your address book.

I agree with yorkie if you do not have bluetooth then the only way someone would know this information is by looking into your phone. or someone that has your number and your bosses No, even your client's no, it is a bit fishy that all the spoof text's are work related.

I know it's personal! Unfortunately, in my job it's very easy to upset people, and as such, abusive phone calls/text messages to the office are quite common. This is altogether more sophisticated, and could have had wide reaching consequences. Any advice for finding out who's doing it? My mobile operator is denying that it's even possible, so they won't help me!
