View Full Version : Miniature Frame Needed

I want to make a "Victorian" sampler for my mum's 1:12 doll's house.
So far all I've been able to locate are metal/gilt frames which are not appropriate or needlecraft kits which are expensive considering I want to actually design and stitch a personal sampler.
Does anyone have / know where I can find a wood/wood effect miniature frame suitable for mounting needlework?
Thanks in anticipation

I've not seen anything dainty enough (how big were you after?) but could you make it from half-round dowel?

Thanks for the reply Madelaine. I'm looking for something approx 1" x 1.5" but can't start designing the sampler until I know what size frame I can get. Even on fine weave fabric I'm not going to have much room to play with!
I've thought about making my own and my Dad has given me some leftover pieces of the doll house skirting board so it looks like I'm going to have to trim that down to build my own frame.
I'm sure someone must make the bloomin things but I just can't find them - perhaps if my prototype works well I could go into mass production and sell them on!:)

Thanks for the reply Madelaine.
Well, it would be nice to bring this board alive, wouldn't it?

on the wall in that pic there is a sampler, i imagine the frame would have been made from polymer clay, so its another idea anyway.

this comes as a kit including the sampler, so the price is reflects that
not actually been of much help to you but im trying
:o
This picture shows a magnified photograph of our flower basket miniature sampler. The sampler kit has a wooden frame which is available in oak, ebony or pine finish. The kit contains 40 holes per inch evenweave fabric, threads, acetate, Velcro, needle, chart and instructions. The gallery size measures just 32 by 26 millimeters.

Thanks for looking Bel
The kit one is the sort of thing that I'm after but I do begrudge paying so much for a kit when I want to put my own design in it - my mother is quite particular about how things should be!!!

i wonder if it would be worth contacting this lady
http://uk.one.ebid.tv/perl/main.cgi?mo=search&type=user&words=ideal
she is really lovely, very friendly and helpful.
she sells dolls house minatures, i have bought bits from her before - for use on cards. (little mugs of tea and buns - which were amazing)
i am not sure if she makes some bits herself or not, but she maybe able to point you in the right direction of where you might find what you are after.
no harm in asking

I'm afraid not. I'm still looking but think I'm going to have to make one, I've mentioned the problem to my brother and he's going to see what he can do for me!

Hi,
I thought you might be interested, Lakeland Plastics Limited sell miniture picture frames. Take a look at www.lakelandplasticslimited.co.uk. Looks under the crafts section. There is also a shop in York which sells everything for dolls houses and I am sure I have seen what you are looking for.
Hope that helps a little.

Hi Seaemelle :-)
After a summer of not doing any stitching I've resurrected my project but still have not found a frame. Did you have any luck finding anything?
I've found some matchstick size pieces of wood in our local craft store and am thinking of just sticking these together and designing something to fit the hole ! or something like that...........

Hi - No I've not got anything yet - but to be honest I've not really been looking as I've been side tracked by life and various other projects (you know how it is!) I'll let you know if / when I fine one!

Hi S-melle
Have you got a particular frame style you want? I could do a range of miniatures in Balsa and cast them in resin for you (using the same process as the miniature buildings in my listings ...... OMG - was that another pimp? {snigger}). That way I can colour the resin pretty much any colour you want (then it doesn't fade) or do it by gilting with genuine gold leaf if you fancy it.
Or do they have to be wood?
Also, 1:12 as a scale I understand, but just looking around my lounge, there are over a dozen different size frames from 6"x6" up tp 24" x 36" - can you give me exact dimensions for the aperture needed - the outer dimensions depend on the frame style
Cheers
Gaz

Hi Gaz :-)
Just picked up on this thread again. I am planning to expand my business around the middle of next year (2007) and may be interested in 1:12 scale picture frames in resin. Not sure of size required yet as I need to design the pic :-)
Does the resin finish look like wood?
Thanks

I was going to offer also to make you one with small scale miniature mouldings, so if your have any problems do give a shout. I can get some in wood but there is a minimum order so it would be a few weeks until I was ready to order. Give a shout anyway if I can help out.
