hmm, I was in South America at the time of the Falkland War, which was of course totally justified, but throughout SA their was a very strong anti-European feeling and I had to watch my back all the time!
I'm not even British!!!

The recession was caused by the previous Labour party debts.
As has this recession.
The poll tax was and still is the correct format.
VAT simplified many of the previous tax's

Considering SA were in the red at the time,
it was a costly manoeuvre

The 1st recession was in the 1930's - or rather the great depression.
It does seem that people forget very quickly though. It was MT and the succesive conservative government that had interest rates at 16% and peeps had their homes repossessed on a daily basis, yet back in the days of the fuel protests (when Labour had only been in power for a short while), there was already calls to bring the Conservatives back into power.
However, going through the same cycle of recession again now, I am not so sure if governments are to blame for it, or whether it is a "natural" recurring event, because WE all want too much.
I can't speak of the MT era, because I wasn't in the UK, but certainly this time round, I have been saying for the last 3 years, that the "bubble would have to burst", i.e that this recession was going to happen; a large majority of the population is living on borrowed money - it doesn't need an economist to see that this can not go on forever. Add to that all the social engineering and re-defining of "poverty" and you have a recipe for disaster.

Ron, not the country I was living in. Most of South America were in a dire state, but not Venezuela - they had their oil resources. Nowadays that country is down the drain again, because of a "close to dictatorship" government.

Not at all, but I'm not going to get into a discusion
of this countries downfall under a "New Labour Goverment"
on these boards. It is not what they are here for.

If the truth was ever told. There was no way the plastic (credit card) economy could survive. I don't think putting all this government money in privite business is the way to fix it, and it won't fix it. The governments should let the privitly held financial instutions go broke, bottoms up, and start over. Trying to fix the credit problem with more credit can never work. At least i think the USA is just printing money with nothing backing it, to fix the financial problems. Won't do a bit of good for banks to have money to loan, everyones credit is shot due to going broke, and the government is not doing anything for the little man going broke.

Politics.......yuch. Guy Fawkes had the right idea, but I suppose these days he'd be classed as a terrorist.
