Woke up this morning to snow...yes.............SNOW! AAaaaaaack!!! We usually get our first dump of the white stuff by Halloween, but this year it came early.

Now I have to dig out the studded tires from the storage shed, get 'em loaded into the car, so when it really starts dumping I can get the tires switched over for the winter.

Anyone else had snow yet? I'm in the USA, Pacific Northwest, State of Oregon, just on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountain Range.

Something tells me it's going to be a long loooooong winter.:(

Not really! Most Americans are crazy enough to drive in the stuff!!:D

Between studded snow tires, tire chains, etc., we just keep plodding away in the stuff. Problem is that here in Oregon we get FEET of it! When it gets too bad I just stay home, too many crazies out there trying to drive in it!:)

I like snow - in moderation admittedly, but I prefer it to the gray wet drizzle with occasional snow flake to make it look like

Have a look on ebid - see if anyone is selling snow tabogans yet.

Seriously - I quite like the snow, and can function quite happily in it. Trouble is, the rest of the UK seems to grind to a halt - even if we get an inch or two of it.

Are you kidding us? I'm way north in Canada and no snow here yet. In fact its a beautifull sunny day. We'll get it soon enough though. Off to go do some shopping in abit. Might be time to start waxing you skies! You might want to fuel up your vehicles. I've heard the rumour of fuel shortage already. We all know what happens to the price then.

An inch? A dusting more like - just like leaves on the rail track

I don't want snow, yet. Parts of Washington have got some already, according to the news. Not where I'm at, luckily.

Well it's been a nice warm day for the time of year, here in Cheshire ,England. I like snow and can't understand why everything grinds to a halt so quickly in the UK - it's probably just a great excuse not to go to work for many. Otherwise the use of chains or snow tyres might help - in Sweden they have (or at least they used to) a date when it is law for you to have changed your tyres for winter even if its still good weather. They work well too - I remember crossing a particularly icy road hardly able to keep upright - the cars typically put their brakes on at the last moment but stopped in time to avoid me - and yes I was on a crossing but it wasn't visible, just the signs at the side of the road.
We used to get feet of snow when I was a kid in Halifax but in Cheshire it's really unusual to see any - everything has to stop to let the kids play in it as its such an unusual occurance.

We had snow for about 2 days last winter, and we always build the obligatory snowman which uses up all the snow in the garden... lol

The snow doesnt last...... but the snowman does he was there a good week or so ! :D

Yep! Here in Oregon we have 'dates' to put them on and have them off, too. In fact, I looked it up this morning and the date to 'legally' have studs on is October 28.....NOT!!! If this keeps up I'll be putting mine on sooner than that...aaaaaaaaaaaack!!!

Never say never poppa501. One of the times I flew through Miami,Florida it was actually freezing! Only one passenger gate actually worked in the whole airport! People were walking around in parka's. Quite a site to see. I was on the way to go sailing with dad who is retired in Puerto Rico so I didn't really mind. Us northerners are used to abit of frost on the pumpkin. Geesh, I might have set myself up with that mention of a pumpkin. lol

I grew up in northern Minnesota (50 miles south of the Canadian border). Remember snow very well. Why do you think I'm in California now? And as far south as I can get and stay in the country!

If for some strange reason I ever get homesick for the stuff  I can drive up to the mountains later in the winter. Hasn't happened yet.

I think I have a rather romantic view of Oregon and Northern Canada.:D I would dearly love to visit and especially to see the Northern lights
It always looks so beautiful with the forests and mountains and the wildlife....
Then I watch a programme on TV that shatters my dreams...the Mosquitoes in the Yukon, the dangers of polar bears attacking yer garbage cans,
I watched a brilliant sieries of programs about truckers on the Ice Road , taking equipment to far out oil bases and driving over a frozen lake...scary stuff and it looked so cold and inhospitable.

My thoughts go back to the first settlers. They must have endured horrendous conditions. Tough people.
Unfortunately I am unable to fly and so will never see Alaska or the Yukon...but I do have Google earth and the TV.....and of course all of you here.
It's great reading about your corner of the world and how you live...

or maybe I am just Nosey:D

Hello. Yes I have driven by that slide many a time. The Peace country is beautiful in summer. It's starting to cool off now. And all the stories of the Yukon are true also. I've been all over it. My brother flies helicopters out of Dawson City, Yukon. He always has a good "white knuckle" story to tell. We see the northern lights in our area sometimes. It's a wonderfull sight. Usually cold when they happen. The whole sky lights up with dancing lights. Amazing.

OK, you reminded of one of the few things I miss from up North . . . the Northern Lights, will never see them down here. And I agree the wilderness in Canada is beautiful (looks a lot like Minnesota BTW). But if there's snow, it's cold!

I'd love to see the British Islands, they look gorgeous! How does that go . . . "the other man's grass is always greener" isn't that a song?
