"There are many many reasons and many many answers my son."

Could be overheating (fan on the blink, full of dust), power supply, mains problems... Unlikely to be software. If you clean it out, be careful. I recommend using an oil-less air compressor, do not be tempted to wipe brush or hoover - any static (electrical charge) source can be fatal.

When mine did something like that, just rebooting for no reason, it turned out to be a dodgy graphics card. Have you tried taking out and re-seating the graphics card? (or any other cards).

The second time, it was the motherboard, and that had to be changed.

In other words, you'll have to do some investigating, it could be anything failing intermittently. I take it it boots normally? What beeps do the motherboard give out before it boots?

Just in case the HD is on its way out, make sure you've got everything important backed up (well it should be anyway, but still...).

That's what I just did to mine :(

Ran out of patience when I put the new chip in, it fired up ok, ran for a day, then wouldn't boot again. So I destroyed it. Very therapeutic :D .

It's now downstairs in pieces, sans HD which is back in its enclosure so I can get at the files, and I'm back on this laptop and the Eee.

I've come to the conclusion that the desktop is unnecessary, the laptop and the Eee do everything I want. Actually the Eee does everything I want, clearly size isn't everything ;) .

Hi Red

Does it do a reboot?

Can be caused by corrupt system software, especially if you get a 'blue screen'. Also caused by overclocking and getting the settings too high/fast for the hardware.

If it just dies, I would suspect the PSU detecting a current overload and shutting down. Could be just about anything, but most likely RAM, graphics card, CPU or the PSU itself.

Does it do it when it's warm? See PSU fault above. Even when cold and recently switched on? More likely a software problem.

My diagnostic solution would be to pull out your live system HD, bung in another equivalent if you have one handy, and create a new basic system. If it's the hardware, should still keep carpping out (unless the hard drive itself). Otherwise suspect Windows (I assume you are running this) is corrupt. In which case, pull your HD, put in another, create a new system....... etc etc

I find Windows needs reinstalling at least every six months to keep it in tip-top condition. That's why I have been experimenting with Linux and will probably move all the PCs over to it shortly.

Nope no Reboot just a shut down

That's how I ended up on Ubuntu on the desktop. Windows corrupted and wouldn't let me in. So new hd and new operating system.

However, in that case it wouldn't reboot at all, would get past the post screen, and I'd then get an error message telling me that Windows couldn't load.

Is your computer booting ok after the shutdown?
