Hi,
I am hoping that some computer buff maybe able to help me here!
I used to have a programme for my computer that scanned my original XP disc and repaired or replaced any damaged or missing files and I cannot for the life of me remember what is was!
If anyone knows of a programme that does this, please please let me know before I go mad.
I might not get back on here tonight so I am not being rude if do not reply.

Norton Utilities?
That had a disk doctor bit of it that allegedly would do repairs and rearrange things nicely. Or at least that was what it said it was doing, I never noticed any difference.

If you just want a general clean up tool, this is very good....
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Click on the download CCleaner link. I have used this on all my own PC's and laptops as well as many others with no problems at all. It 100% free.

You could try XP's builtin repair tool. SFC /scannow . Some instructions on usage here: http://ask-leo.com/what_is_the_system_file_checker_and_how_do_i_run_i t.html

I guess that it depends on what you're looking for. Do you have an actual problem, or are you just looking for something to do routine maintence?

As a one-time computer engineer take it from me - the best overall fix for Windows is a total clean re-install every six months or so. Not so bad with XP, but it was a pain with 98/2000!
And a lot easier if you choose to only use software which can easily be backed up by copying data files to a CD for later copying back. That's why I don't use Outlook Express/Internet Explorer, but Firefox/Thunderbird, for example.
As for your specific question, I don't recall a specific program which did that, sorry :(

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies, I thought this was the sort of thing I was looking for but it didn't help
What is happening is, when I open any folder in 'My Documents' I get the dreaded 'Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close etc etc' message, so I thought I may have a corrupted file somewhere.

I thought there was only so many times that you can re-install XP with the same product key (I thought it was 6 times) before you can no longer register it without having to contact Microsoft???

I'm a sod for hitting system restore if I get a problem.
Never had the encountered a problem message opening my doccs before though. Only if I've had surfing problems & it closes those windows but leaves others such as msn open.

Really? Have you managed to get that to work?
When I was using XP and ran into a problem, it NEVER worked, ever, and always ended up being some kind of emergency fix or a reinstall.
Last time Windows decided to corrupt on me, I took out the HD, put it into an enclosure, got a new HD (bigger, better, faster, lol) and stuck Ubuntu on it. Not looked back since. It's given me less problems than XP ever did, and is faster and simpler. I can still get at my old files on the old HD via the enclosure, and all is well.

Good move, much like moving to Ebid, not so well known but much more friendly. I am using XP at the moment since I had a hardware failure on my other machine. Will be going back to Linux soon.

Hi,
I am trying to put some holiday films on to dvd using nero and I get the 'Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close etc etc' message. I have even tried using a converting programme to make the film quality better and get the same message, it used to run fine, I have done a virus scan and thats clean

Hi, yeah I'm 99.9% sure it's not a virus issue anyhow. Have you resently installed any new software?

Hi Sofia,
It's good to hear from you and yes I do remember you. I have never been away, just been lurking about!
I'm not trading in dvd's anymore as I had to cease trading due to losing to much money, but I am still selling many quality used items and some new, as I have a wedding to pay for (hint hint! ;))
For Coastelcoder, email on the way!

Hi.
What version ov IE have you got?
If it is version 6 then upgrade to version 7 and do the latest updates.
That should fix it.
Good Luck.
