I was sent a link to a site which is a laugh if you've got a few minutes to kill. It lets you make videos an add effects and music and stuff.
Here is one (http://www.onetruemedia.com/otm_site/view_shared?p=5dd9b7bc1bce131f3ad2cf&skin_id=701&utm_source=otm&utm_medium=email) which I made, :)

I understand that having a model heron near your pond deters other real herons.

I think that that's a myth Ken, I think it has the opposite affect. If a passing heron sees another apparently feeding then it will also land to feed there too.

Nope, you're wrong, Yorkie. Herons are territorial and will not intrude where another is seen feeding.

I've just Googled a few sites about the subject and it looks like you and Ken are correct, a dummy heron next to the pond will scare off other herons. Except in early spring when they're searching for a mate, then it may attract other herons.
A mate of my dad has a problem with a heron trying to feed in his pond, he was going to shoot it until I pointed out that they are protected and he could be fined £400 if he tried to harm it. He had a mesh net over the pond but he heron somehow managed to remove part of it, at the moment he has borrowed his neighbours dog to run around his garden and that seems to be working.

Perhaps you need a gay heron then that might solve the spring friskiness problem :D
